J.S. Bach’s beloved Cello Suites have become one of the most celebrated collections of music, and performances often feel intimate, meditative and transcendent. These solo compositions have been transcribed for nearly every orchestral instrument, and here Charles Vernon performs the Sarabande from Suite No. 1 on bass trombone.

I see Charlie. I like. Instantly.
He is one of the trombone greats, and has been a valuable asset to CSO throughout his career.
Thank you, Mr. Vernon.

What a pleasure! What a treasure! I've always loved the lower instruments: the trombone and tuba, the bass and the cello. So a trombonist playing the sarabande from a Bach piece for solo cello is a real delight. For those of us who feel that the tuba has been unfairly slighted: check out Vaughan Williams' tuba concerto. What fun!

It was truly a privilege to learn from Mr. Vernon briefly back in March before everything happened. Wonderful teacher and player. He even gave me a copy of his book afterwards.

I once heard Charlie test a bass trombone that I was selling (it was already spoken for). He played another Bach Cello Suite plus assorted selections. Must tell you that he is not only an amazing virtuoso of the trombone, but as people hear in this video a 'great' 'world class' musician.

One tremendous trombone player. I met him in Philadelphia years ago, he is a real, gentleman as well

I met Charlie in February briefly at DePaul while attending CBDNA. He is one of the nicest cats in the business. His sound inspires me and is the role model to my bass trombone playing. Beautiful playing, Charlie!

First off, this is so great to hear from one of my bass trombone heroes. Second, I'll going to keep this video in my back pocket for the next time a solo and ensemble judge tells one of my students that slide vibrato is only appropriate for use in jazz.

Charlie is probably the very first virtuoso bass trombonist. Lotsa really good bass bone players out there. But virtuosos? Okay, Ben van Dijk. James Markey. Micha Davis. My personal favorite bass trombonist is Peter Norton of the Cincinnati Symphony.

But Charlie is Charlie. A force of nature in the physics of bass trombone.

I was blessed to be able to perform with Charlie a lot as a sub with the Baltimore Symphony many years ago during my undergrad years at Peabody. Same beautiful sound and musicality, and he looks startlingly similar (no way he has aged 45 years in that time!). Dude must be living a clean life….
