Alberta wildfires: Up-close look inside Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation fire zone

Nearly 100 wildfires are burning across Alberta, with many of them out of control. Most of the province is under a special air quality statement due to the smoke blanketing the region.

Two weeks after the residents of Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation, Alta., left their homes due to a raging wildfire, Global News has now been given an up-close look inside this community.

Neetu Garcha surveys the destruction and looks at how people in other parts of the province are coping with the smoke.

I drove by smokey lake and pine lake this morning and saw something disturbing, some one is piling hundreds of huge tinder piles with dry logs and dry grass off the highway in the forest, typically these piles are used by farmers to burn dry tinder material usually in a middle of a field, but what’s disturbing is these piles are in the middle of the forest once ignited (prob this weekend) pine lake and smokey lake area boyle, will have a new forest fire . these fires are being ignited on purpose just go drive north on any highway and you will see what im talking about, providing they don’t close of the highways to hide their dirty little secret .

My cousin is chief of council of the peace river and cree reservations please pray for my family. I'm hoping they are okay coming back home. The fires are crazy I can barely breath were I am. I pray they are okay hai hai to all the firefighters. To my band I hope all 4000+ members are okay and please find somewhere safe. Always supports.
