In Italian all nouns have a gender (masculine or feminine) and a number (singular or plural).
In the singular form, generally (but not always):
- nouns ending in “-o” are masculine (e.g. il tavolo = the table, il libro = the book)
- nouns ending in “-a” are feminine (e.g. la matita = the pencil, la tazza = the cup)
- nouns ending in “-e” are sometimes masculine (e.g. il cane = the dog, il pesce = the fish) and sometimes feminine (e.g. la chiave = the key, la carne = the meat).
There are exceptions to this rule: some masculine singular nouns end in “-a” (e.g. il problema = the problem, il sistema = the system) and some feminine singular nouns end in “-o” (e.g. la mano = the hand).
This is the basic rule to start with, there are other rules that we’ll see in more advanced videos. Stay with us!
Top tip: to be sure if a noun is masculine or feminine, look at the article (la carne, la mano, il pesce).
You can also use our videos to learn new vocabulary. Write down the words as you see them to build your vocabulary.

Ciao!

Passione Italiana with Marta is the best Italian language course I have found on YouTube. My mother tongue is Norwegian, a non-Latin language. Before following Marta, I had no prior knowledge of the Italian language. So far I have completed level A1 and A2 and made my own "Passione Italiana dictionary and grammar" book. The lessons are well planned and the progress is well considered. Most important is that the marvelous teacher Marta makes each lesson fun. 👍

La Chiave is femmine because it has ‘La’ before the noun so ‘la’ determines the feminine when the noun ends with ‘o’ or ‘e’ and ‘il’ before the noun refers to the masculine
