Depeche Mode - The Worst Crime

Third track, awesome

Lyrics:
There's a lynching in the square
You will have to join us
Everyone's going to be there
We're setting up the truss
Once there were solutions
Now we have no excuses
It got lost in confusion
So we're preparing the nooses

And oh, we had so much time
How could we commit the worst crime?

Blame misinformation, misguided leaders
Apathetic hesitation, uneducated readers
For whatever reasons we now find ourselves in this
We are all charged with treason
And there's no one left to hear

And oh, we had so much time
How could we commit the worst crime?

We're the judge and the jury
The hangman, the convict
It's too late for fury
Our indictment was hand-picked
So step out to the gallows
And accept your sentence
For being so shallow
You must pay a penance

And oh, we had so much time
How could we commit the worst crime?

And oh, we had so much time
How could we commit the worst crime?

Spirit is clearly complex and bewildering. But it remains the real Depeche Mode's charm. It can't be easy looking like being a masterpiece on the first listening. I love the uneventful dimension of The Worst Crime. It rings true like a testimony. Furthermore, it could have been on Ultra. Depeche Mode has the genius to keep the mystery intact laying emphasis on their darkest aspects in a fascinating style.

Depeche Mode is my favourite band. I love all their studio albums from Speak & Spell to Spirit. Long live Dave Gahan, Martin Gore and Andy Fletcher!

To me personally when I listen to this song I get thoughts to all the crimes we commit by doing nothing. Some of the most depraved and appalling crimes in human history were silently condoned by those who stood by, and did nothing.

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Love this song...it is equal parts haunting and honest in its approach. Dave's vocal perfectly evokes feelings of remorse and regret...and the tone and tempo of the arrangement hits me in the solar plexus....if heartbreak and sorrow could sing, it would sound like this.

'Killing yourself' is considered the worst crime in many cultures - AKA giving up the gift of life that was given to you. In philosophy the 'Self' is the 'Spirit', the 'Soul. Killing your'self' is killing your soul - in other words killing everything that it means to be good and true. The song is about the human race forsaking the love and empathy of the soul.

I love the lyrics of this song, they seem to flow naturally besides they are so painfully up to date. Dave's voice sounds very good too.

I like to imagine this song as a kind of meta theme song for the Metal Gear series. The series is about the decline of the world because of a single conflict that branched into several proxy conflicts. this song seems to also tell of a declining world. the line "how could we commit the worst crime?" refers to the mass censorship of information by the Patriots as well as the several characters throughout the series that have threatened or even gone through with using nuclear weapons. the song also sounds like it's about a conflict in which everyone involved is insane. the main conflict of the Metal Gear series is of course one where everyone involved is wrong. obviously that's not what the song is really about those are just my thoughts.

EDIT: the line about "misguided leaders" also reminds me of Big Boss, a leader of an unofficial nation of soldiers who did what he did to achieve a misguided goal.

I sometimes wonder, How many people actually realize how brilliant this band is? Art in music, is a lost Art, but DM has never put out any BS like a lot of Musicians do later on in their careers, They definitely are on the same level as The Beatles, and that is not an exaggeration!

The part from 0:00 to 0:53 sounds really "soul aching". It's like you're waking up to reality after a tragic part of your life, having to face everything by yourself.
