Tires for Electric Vehicles

If your electric vehicle is a couple of years old, you may need new tires. What tires should you put on your EV? Are there tires made for EVs? How will it affect the range of your EV? In this video I give you the information that I found, let you know which two models of tires that I focused on, and what I bought. I also show you how tires are replaced, balanced, and aligned, in case you have never seen how it is done.

FYI, these tires are also good for vehicles that are not electric 😎.

The all-season Nokian One tires that I chose have Aramid, commonly known as Kevlar, in the sidewalls! This is one of the first all-seasons tires to include Aramid technology that is more common in winter tires.

Fun fact: Some of the tires that Tesla uses have a foam insert glued to the inside of the tire to help reduce road noise.

Below are some of the Google search results that I had, at the time of recording this video, for the two types of all-season tires I was interested in.

Some search results for Energy Efficient All-Season Tires:
• Bridgestone Ecopia
• Hankook Optimo H426
• Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max
• Toyo Versado Eco
• Yokohama Avid Ascend

Some search results for tires listed as made for EV tires:
• Michelin Primacy MXM4
• Continental EcoContact 6
• Bridgestone Ecopia EP422 Plus
• Pirelli Cinturato P7 All Season Plus II
• Michelin Energy Saver A/S
• Nokian Wetproof
• Michelin Pilot Sport EV

It seems that I had a moment of dyslexia in the video when I said the word Aramid... it came out as Amarid! So to correct what I said in the video, the technology being used is Aramid, not Amarid. That should have been a blooper, but my brain did not even realize that it made the mistake 😎.

Having been a long term owner of several EV's, tires are very critical. After extensive research, I cam to the conclusion that OEM tires give the best performance / gas mileage.

I think your outtakes are hilarious 😆!!! Thanks for brightening up my day. I find your content to be very informative. I’m looking to get an EV in the near future and it may very well be a Niro EV, they seem to offer the best bang for the buck. I recently test drove a 2022 Niro EV and was impressed by the handling and the comfort of the seats.

Thank for the research. I am now at 48k km, used the orginal Michelin MXV4 year round in normal mode, looks like I have bit more thread left. But after this summer I am definitely going to replace and are seriously now considering the Nokian One as I value comfort, silence, economy and wet weather handling.

That ending out take was the best! I say the same thing when I hear one of those noise monsters do that!

I see the Soul in the background. We drove the 1st Gen and loved it... No one seems to want to talk about it but I suspect that the Soul is superior to the Niro. If you ever wanted to do a video comparing the eSoul to the rest would be awesome.

Thanks for the video!

I am considering buying my first EV, and since I too live in Quebec, I have found your videos very useful and informative. Thank You!

The factor I find difficult is noise / noise rating. I need new tyres for my Kia Soul EV and this was helpful. Thanks!

I always learn so much from your videos. This time the tidbit was lifting points, I will make sure to ask where I end up for my first tire change if they know about lifting evs, its not something I had thought about

I have a Chevy bolt EV and I am considering getting the same tires just wondering a one-year update have you seen noticeable mild degradation after you got them broken or are they the same

I replaced my Michelin Energy Saver tires because they started producing a loud noise at highway speeds towards the end of their life, yet before the breaker bar. I researched for a quiet tire with strong sidewall and purchased the West Lake SA07. Definitely a quiet and more sporty tire but it’s looking like I have lost 10-15% range and thinking of returning them.

He does make me think of Agent Smith though 🤣😂

Salut André! Bon vidéo! Pas que je ne connaisse pas ça, mais ça aurait été un bon temps pour expliquer les chiffres de gardeur, de vitesse, de charge et de Treadwear des pneus. 👍

Why wasn’t the hankook kinergy ST considered? Seems like a good tire on paper as far as EVs go. Eco focus sidewalls, lighter weight, good treadlife rating… your thoughts?

I have a Kia eniro myself but found with the large amount of torque available that the wheels would occasionally slip when pulling away hard. Would a longer running tyre, ie harder rubber, not cause it to loose traction a lot more. I’m scared to replace my tyres for anything other then the Michelin’s it came with which have been surprisingly good in all weather, including deep snow.
