2012 Kia Rio Test Drive & Car Review

The GDi gamma 1.6 liter 4-cylinder engine produces 138 horsepower and 123 lb-ft. of torque. The Rio has great fuel economy with 30 MPG in the city and 40 MPG on the highway. There are tons of features and options that come standard on the Rio but the best part is Hyundai's 100k mile powertrain warranty. The 2012 Kia Rio is a great value at this price point.

I love this car, the way I drive I get 29.8 miles city, and 41.3 on the highway :)

It's not that bad. Fuelly is the best source for MPG, and if you look up the Rio it's pretty decent.

actually for owning an 2011 elantra and a 2012 Rio, i can tell you the the 1.6 gamma gets a better fuel milleage hands down. The reason they dont put the 1.8 NU engine in any other platform, is because the 1.8 is a transition engine between the old Alpha engine ( 2.0 that used to be in the 2010 elantra ) and the gamma engine serie ( 1.6 2.0 and the 2.4 GDI ). The 1.8 has all the technologies of the gammas, except his fuel injection, wich is still MPI (multiport injection) instead of GDI

I wanted to test drive one of these with a manual transmission, but of the 5 KIA dealerships near me, NONE of them had a 5door with a manual transmission. That was back in 2012, so I waited for the 2013 to come out and guess what, 8 months later and still not even one 5door to be found in a manual transmission, so gave up on KIA.

Nice review but the camera movement leaves a lot to be desired. The shallow DOF looks different, almost gives it a green screen feel to it.

they says it gets the same economie on the window description card, but in real life, there is no way to get those numbers with the elantra, especially the economie in town. but for the rio and the accent, you can easilly get better number that what they advertise. i know i own a 2011 elantra and a 2012 rio

@marklethanarkle I believe there is a power button for the start stop function so you leave it off

is it loud inside the car when your driving?

get either the hyundai accent or kia rio. nothing else compares to the power, fuel economy, and overall bang for your buck!

for some reason that stop start function really turns me off. i want fuel economy, but i'm not willing to put unnecessary wear and tear on an already questionable engine (i know, they've improved). it's one of those wait and see type things that i'm not willing to place bets on. is there a way to get the high end package without having that echo thing in there? because that would really help make up my mind.

Go test drive a used one of these with around 20K miles on it.
I guarantee that you'll see the REAL value of it.
You'll see that it's great at presentations, Not longevity.
