This is why I have a small passport bag around my neck, just for situations like this. I once almost forgot my passport on my connecting flight, making me almost unable to immigrate to my place of work. My heart stopped, honestly. Thank god that I was compelled to check my seat again when I was almost out of the plane.

Oh dear... as someone who's worked for an embassy in a foreign country, whenever traveling, always try to find the contact information for the embassy or consulate from your country in whatever country you're traveling to. There might not be one, but if there is, they will do a lot to help you out! They can also help you with a lot of good information before going, such as places to avoid, what to do if you get lost, which vaccinations you should get, all sorts of things!

Never put your stuff on the counters when you travel. My mom always does that and she has lost all kinds of things...documents, cameras and phones.
I missed a flight to go back home (with my checked luggage) because my passport had expired a few days earlier. After my flight departed with my friends and luggage, the airport police told me I could still travel with that passport.

I always keep a small bag just for the valuables like passport, with me on all times and at sight at all times

There's nothing more stressful that losing your passport. I was actually on a plane to Tokyo when I "lost" my passport. I was boarding. I set some papers and my passport on my seat as I stowed my luggage overhead. When I looked down, my passport was gone. I looked everywhere. I crawled around the floor. It was just gone. The flight attendants assured me that it would eventually be found because--where else could it be? I had it on the plane. There's no where it could be other than on the plane. Several hours into the flight, the person next to me found it. Somehow it had gotten underneath her bag which was stowed under the seat in front of her. Don't ask me how it got there.

I don't know why she waited for so long, even if your schedule is packed from your job, the passport is a bigger prio than your own job at that point. The moment I was told the passport was in the lost and found, I wouldn't have waited, I would have just go right away, no matter how tired I would be, the passport is very important and high prio always. You have no idea how important it is.

Probably dosent matter in Japan since they are picky but I dont think it would hurt to have a copy. I held both to very dear life in my travels
