Caught on Hidden Camera: Sloth Bear Mama & Cub

This sloth bear mother is returning to her den after a long night of foraging with her cub riding on her back. Sloth bear cubs often ride on their mother’s back which is a unique trait among bears.

Once the cub is safe inside the den, the mother checks out the hidden camera to make sure it’s not a threat. The hidden cameras allow us to document maternal dens without being very invasive.

One way that #WildlifeSOS studies animals in the wild is by setting up movement-activated hidden cameras. This short footage was captured by our research cameras while we collected data on sloth bears in Karnataka.
