The magnets can be placed based on the smallest piece. That way they're in the same place on all pieces.
They could also put magnets at the end and metal plates towards the core, but this would make the magnetic properties weaker and probably a bit inconsistent as well. So my primary guess is that they don't have magnets in the outside corners but instead on the inside corners :)
