Actually Ctrl E > Un-Subdivide is the first thing to try in this case, with Limited Dissolve you ruin the topology

Looks like it leaves a lot of ngons though. It's been over a decade since I worked in 3d - has the smoothing over ngons been solved since then, or do they still cause errors?

good for when you make models elsewhere and want to optimize in blender for some reason
