The Wonder review: Florence Pugh sears in psychological drama

The Wonder stars Florence Pugh as Lib Wright, an English nurse in Ireland after the Great Famine who is charged with observing a miraculously fasting girl. Sebastian Leilo's psychological drama is now out on Netflix - but is it any good? Here's my review of The Wonder on Netflix 2022.

I had read and really liked the book so was interested to see how it was adapted for the screen. Overall I think they did a very good job and captured the book very well. I do wonder why they changed the newspaper (Tom Burke worked for) from the Irish Times to the Telegraph?

I totally disagree with you on this one dude! The opening for me was foreshadow that we are going to get a slow drawn out drama and we are going to try really really hard that this has deeper meaning. I thought it was distracting and deterred the impact of the story they were telling. I was hoping the acting was going to be good, but with the exception of the child actress, I just didn't see it. Pugh shows almost no emotion all the time and is stale as 3 month old bread. I did like the display of the social issues of being a nurse and woman she runs into during this time period so that bit was interesting.

Also, she actually wasn't very good at her job of "watching" as half the film she is out wandering in fields, which did look pretty, and I'm left thinking why isn't she watching the girl, couldn't someone be feeding her? I think the biggest problems I had for this film were that there were no interesting characters, no one with any drop of charisma, and the plot was just too slow even for a time period drama.

The film narrator is Niamh Algar and in the opening scene Florence Pugh is eating not writing!
