Take the gain trim pot on the BE OD and roll it back to almost off. Adjust the tight control to taste and you get a better mid control and less aggressive dirty sound.

Great video Philip. Both pedals are great, depends on your style playing. Dirty Shirley has more attack especially on leads whereas the BE OD is more of a full sound for rhythm guitar playing

You can get the tones more in the same ballpark by backing the mid control of the DS all the way down. The BE-OD has more treble and the high end seems to be slighly brighter. BE-OD is little bit scooped in the mids but if you bring the presence down to around 9-10 oclock the mids come more prominent. Keep in mind that the mid control of the DS is neutral when the control is all the way to the left, it can only add mids. (LATER EDIT--> I am not entirely sure about this, so don´t quote me on that.) I have got a feeble remembrance that Dave said that in some video that I can`t recall . Gain wise there is of course a big difference. You can back of the gain in the BE-OD with the control and trim pot but there is a sweet pot and you lower the gain below that you lose the low end chug and oomph character of the pedal which is IMO one of the main attractions of BE-OD. I like the DS more but I am keeping both of the because they both have their own flavor.

Finally a comparison between these two pedals. It sounds like we both went through the same process in trying to figure out the best way to use both pedals. I definitely lean towards the DS side but can't see myself getting rid of my BE. It's a nice "go to" if you need a "metal" type tone. However you have affirmed for me what I was thinking of doing anyway which is to get hold of another DS and use that for my lead tone. I'll use my current DS for the rhythm tone. This essentially means my BE will now just be on my board in case I need to "cut heads". Thanks Phillip.

BE-OD Deluxe with the mid range knob, and pot adjustments. A beautiful thing.

I thought they sounded almost the same when you took out the mids on the dirty shirley

To me (a kid who grew up around music my whole life) the dirty shirley just sounds awsome

I have the be-od. I find the pedals similar when you take the Mids out the Shirley. That being said, when I go into a lead break I'm going to boost with an eq. Bump up the 800k a little and the notes sing. If you want more meaty tones during rhythm parts in a song just use the eq on the amp or a clean boost that has a nice chunky mid hump... This may not work for everyone but it's worked nicely for me...with everything at 12 o'clock of course the DS is going to sound thicker bc of the mid control turn the presence down on the be-od and it thickens up rock get the DS for metal be-od for sure

To me, they both sound very similar, but I actually prefer the tone of the BE-OD over the Shirley, they're both great pedals without question, but for me it boils down to personal preference

The BE OD sounds like a nice bedroom practice pedal. But no mids = disappearing act in a mix. A lesson I learned the hard way in one of my earlier live gigs when a Blue Voodoo with a Boss GT-6 (I think that was the correct model) used as a preamp buried my 5150 regardless of how much I rolled up the volume. And that was NOT a quiet amp. :D

I run the gain at about 10:00 on my BE-OD then run a Tube Screamer as a clean boost in front of it. The Tube screamer puts the mids in the signal, Perfection

Defiantly the Shirley. Would like to hear a comparison between the Dirty Shirley & Angry Charlie.

Hi Phillip
I personally just live both of these pedals and can use both of these pedals desperately for writing, recording and live applications.
First and foremost the Dirty Shirley and the BEOD just sound and feel like 2 completely different animals in my musical mind I hear a plate reverb and some compression on the BEOD and on the Dirty Shirley I can hear a chamber reverb and a modulated delay with the effect mix on the modulated delay at about 10:30 for leads and the BEOD for rhythms only. With my wedding coming up on November 17th I wish these 2 pedals desperately would appear thank you Phillip for doing this video

Great Demo, I totally agree with your conclusion, this beefy creamy crunchy lead tone. Amazing pedal !

The smile on your face when you play the dirty shirley says it all

The Dirty Shirley with the mids scooped does sound like the BE OD. If I had to choose one I would go with the Dirty Shirley.

BE-OD has more compression on the lows, IMO. Add a drummer and band, then the dirty shirley will cut through and shine with all those mids.

DS is thicker and fuller. I like them both for different reasons. Now I don't know which one to buy :(

Played both of these today with the intent of playing metal-influenced skate punk/melodic hardcore and I very much preferred the Dirty Shirley. The BE-OD is more compressed than I like and sounded AWFUL with palm muting, notes rang out long after I fully muted the strings. Just super muddy. Definitely going to take the Shirley with me next time I head into the studio as I like its tone a lot better than what I get out of my JCM2000.
