Hardness should not be confused with strength even though they have some overlapping areas and some materials have both strength and hardness. Hardness is measured by resistance to scratch or micro-cut, where as strength is measured by impact resistance and tensor, so for example, a wooden baseball bat is stronger than a piece of glass, because it can shatter or easily break a glass window, but a piece of glass is much harder than the wooden baseball bat, because a piece of glass can easily cut the wooden baseball bat. A piece of wood is strong but soft, because it is easily cut or scratched by something harder per the Mohs hardness scale, and that is why a glass window is harder to scratch or cut compared to a wooden material. Hard to cut but easy to break due to brittleness. Diamond is extremely hard, but not very strong, because it can be smashed to bits with a steel hammer which is stronger. Diamond is still much harder than steel, because a diamond can cut the steel hammer an half! People often confuse hardness with strength, but they are actually different.

Due to extensive research done by the University of Pittsburgh, diamond has been confirmed as the hardest metal known to man. The research is as follows:
Pocket-protected scientists built a wall made of iron and crashed a diamond car into it at 400 miles per hour, and the car was unharmed. They then built a wall out of diamond and crashed a car made of iron moving at 400 miles an hour into the wall, and the wall came out fine.
