Thanks, that was a good summary. One of the lowest turnouts in US history was the 1948 election. Why? Because it was one of the first where the media, including the infant television, convinced voters that it was all over, Dewey was going to wipe the floor with Truman, and that was it. No point in voting and, in record numbers voters stayed away from the polls. There was even a strong third party race with the Dixiecrats on all Southern ballot, but it didn't pull in a significant number of voters enough to offset those who stayed home.

The next morning, the famous picture of Truman holding up a copy of the Chicago Daily Tribune with a large headline reading "DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN". Well, not so fast. Truman actually beat Dewey with electoral vote numbers very close to what we've seen in the 2016 election. He had a higher plurality of the popular vote because the Dixiecrats cost him about 2.5% of the vote.

Truman's come from behind victory is generally considered by historians to be the biggest political upset in presidential election history. I don't know how historians will rank 2016 but I suspect it will be the election holding that honor now. 1948 was a difference in styles more than substance. Dewey was seen as the polished aristocrat that "deserved" the election. Truman was the rough edged haberdasher political hack, but a guy who was plain spoken and was in touch with working people. The Similarities between the two greatest upsets in US political history are quite striking.

The 95% figure for blacks voting for Obama in 2008 can be deceptive in determining racism.  In 2004, they voted 88% democrat.  In 2000, 90%.  Perhaps the 95% figure can be explained for reasons other than racism- like the strong tendencies of that blacks vote democrat as well as charisma- Obama did well with many other groups compared to Kerry or Gore.  The myth that Trump voters are racist comes more from ideology than turnout.  Fact: the KKK is a racist organization.  Former leaders, like David Duke do support Trump.  Of course, we should paint Trump supporters with such a broad brush- many are just tired of the worst that politics has to offer.

There's always going to be a problem when someone takes faith in the words in others without their own knowledge on what's happening. i.e. many Americans taking the mainstream media as gospel.

The voter turnout calculation may be a bit deceptive though due to population growth. Or at least the calculus on Trump versus Romney (or Hillary versus Obama) due to population growth. Because people live for a longer time on average and because there are likely more eligible voters who have reached voting age it would make sense for there to be more votes for both Clinton and Trump in this election than in 2012. In fact there's an obvious trend of total vote counts going up compared to prior elections (a quick comparison with say, the 2000 election shows far more votes cast while overall percentage of eligible voters going to the polls is similar for example).

2:46 Is why this is the last hurrah of the republican party. DT must IMMEDIATELY move on demographic controls. What can I say? It's so obvious!
