Scotland fans react as German media brands Tartan Army the 'best in the world'

Scotland fans have been labelled 'the friendliest Army in the world’ by Euro 2024 hosts Germany.

Around 200,000 Tartan Army foot soldiers descended on Munich last week for the country's Euro opener.

One week on, the kilted hordes have won the admiration of the host nation, with Germans declaring "we love you Scots."

German internet news service Blick carried a major piece on the history of the Tartan Army under the headline, ‘The history of the friendliest army in the world.’

the scottish fans have been amazing, i mean we germans knew that. we love scotland for a long time and i think us and the scots have a lot in common. its just a big party and tbh, if you have such nice visitors its easy to be a good host as well. well done scotland, much love from the germans 🖤❤💛

I was in Germany 🇩🇪 for 10 days for the Euros. Wonderful, welcoming and friendly people. We made great friends in the streets and bars of Koblenz, Munich, Cologne and Stuttgart. Thank you Germany and its people for looking after us so well. I love an Andechs beer now too! 😂🍺

As a Munich resident I've seen many kinds of fans come and go. Scottish fans stood out to me because I got to sit on my balcony at night hearing the sound of bag pipes in the city streets. Very nice.

I also have to say that Scots and Bavarians are just very compatible, it seems. Neither drink responsibly, but are experienced enough to avoid the worst outcomes. Both have their weird instruments and local garb and are barely understood by the mainland. Like brothers from another mother.

But I also gotta say that recent months and years have basically been full of culture war stuff, but most people don't experience any of that in their normal lives, they just see it online or in the news, but it still shapes expectations. Its essentially fear mongering.
In Germany there was a feeling of uncertainty before the Cup as a result of that. People expected violence, depending on whether you are more left or more right leaning you were either more concerned about terrorist attacks, or about Nazi chants and attacks.

So now many people are kind of relieved to experience that the vast majority of people are just good people looking to have a good time.
Maybe this is a little reality check in times were we are surrounded by stories of human depravity on the news all the time.
