From a guy that interviewed JB

I went into my archives. These are the actual transcripts. He used the rack version of the Casio FZ-1, the FZ-10m as I recall. He sequenced it with the Akai MPC.

About Energy Flash:
JOEY BELTRAM I sampled just a normal bass, just a plain boring bass from my "Roland JX-3" and played it back and messed with the filters in the "Casio" (sampler). Added a little attack on the resonance, so it would sound a little different depending on how you’d press the key on the velocity. I got that "Energy Flash" bass tone thing, and it just sounded great. It’s the same thing for the bassline, the lower bassline. It’s the same sound, just played two octaves lower. So it all was just coming out of the "Casio", that was it, I’d made my little "Energy Flash" bass. I’m surprised, that people still today are interested in the record. It’s been like 20 years or so and it still seems to get played, and I still hear it out a lot which is pretty cool.

I love seeing videos about this tune. There is an excellent recreation by another guy on here. He really nails it. I’ll try and find the link later.

Opened up for @JoeyBeltram at the Limelite in NYC for the Logic Records Party CMJ in 1995 was so bizarre and yet awesome. This track changed the Scene and was essential.

At just thirteen years old, he began spinning electro and hip-hop records for entertainment in 1983. He switched to house music in 1985, when the first wave of Chicago house hit New York City. He bought an Alpha Juno 1; he wasn't a millionaire who could afford a Roland Jupiter 6; he simply didn't have the money for such equipment. The Juno Alpha 1 was "the poor man's Juno"; he couldn't even afford a Juno 106.

In 1989, he began making some of his earliest productions on various small New York record labels, using their equipment in his home music studio.

The studio Renaat Vandepapeliere built for R&S Records was simply called R&S Studios, located in Ghent, Belgium.

The studio was conceived by Renaat and her partner Sabine Maes as an accessible yet professional space, filled with top-of-the-line equipment (Roland synthesizers, Akai samplers, analog mixers, Lexicon effects, etc.) with the intention of empowering young, visionary artists who couldn't afford it.

Renaat Vandenpapeliere describes the track in the Red Bull Academy interview as an icon of what was reflected in the nightlife of the era when ecstasy was the drug of the moment among young people and that so many were being taken away. She saw it as a perfect soundtrack, demonstrating the hypnotic effects of the drug while a voice reminds you of what you're taking... dark music from the dark era of clubbing was summed up in this track; it has that vibe that was felt throughout Europe and the rest of the world.

The Alpha Juno 1 was his, and he decided to bring his synthesizer and some vinyl records for sampling, which he already used at home.

Everything was done in that R&S studio, which was later dismantled.

As the music industry and technology evolved, and with changes in the label's artistic and commercial direction, the physical studio became less important. During the late 90s and early 2000s, R&S began to operate more as an independent label without a permanent studio of its own, opting instead for external recordings and home studio productions.

R&S Records shifted its focus, expanded its catalog, and began focusing on more experimental sounds, more abstract techno, and advanced electronica with artists like James Blake, Blawan, Kangding Ray, and Ben UFO in the more recent era. This meant less need for a large, centralized studio, as many artists worked in their own spaces.

But Renaat makes it clear that Energy Flash was such a huge success that it made her reconsider pursuing a path of new artists with risky music that wasn't meant to be hits.

Energy Flash truly has everything that might not be a musical hit, but it ended up being a mass phenomenon from a small label that made millions of people dance. It was the turning point for R&S, according to Renaat Vandenpapeliere. It was the turning point for everything they wanted to achieve, and today it is one of the most important labels in the history of electronic music.
