I Destroyed My Entire Family with a $99 DNA Test Kit... Relationship Stories

We've all been seeing the recent craze of DNA testing and whatnot, so my dad and I decided to jump in the bandwagon and we bought 2 from 23andme. We got our results back a few days ago and I went into the DNA relatives section to check out my matches. At the top it listed my dad as only sharing 29.2% DNA with me and being predicted to be a half-brother, which is impossible. This didn't make sense to me since we also shared a paternal haplogroup and we just look so alike, so he was definitely my father. My cousin also had taken the test a while back and she shared 24.6% with me, also predicted to be my half-sibling. We're supposed to share around 12%, being 1st cousins.

I couldn't think of a genetic relationship that would explain what I was seeing and I had doubts in the accuracy of the percentages, so I made this post on r/23andme, asking for help. Basically, the shared percentages are extremely accurate and highly unlikely to be false.

Stories like this piss me off. OP always blame themselves, EVERYONE blames the "dad" for leaving and rarely do you hear the woman getting the blame and accountability they truly deserve on top of the legal system rewarding them with alimony and child support. WTF!!!

Revealing a secret / taking paternity tests doesn't ruin the family. The initial action does (cheating etc.)

DNA test should be mandatory at birth!, to avoid all this mess!

DNA test: $99. Uncovering a dark family secret? Priceless! For everything else, there's Mastercard.

I kinda did the same thing. I was glad to have answers but lost most of my family due to my birth mother’s lies. I’ll always be the scapegoat because I dared to speak the truth. I know the truth and now they do, even if they deny it.

Ahhh paternity fraud. A tale as old as time and as common as a cold.

Did anyone else have to pause at the toddler getting beaten to death by their mother?

This is why paternity tests should be mandatory.

Guys...
Whenever a child of yours is born, please make two Paternity tests!!!
Two because there is always a small chance that one test could be wrong.
Even if you are sure it's your child, it's better to waste some money than living with a lie and finding out the truth in the future!

The tests are absolutely accurate, as far as genetic relationships go. However, the ethnicity aspect has room for improvement.

1st Story: Claiming to be raped by your brother-in-law? And... you went to family dinners, visited him, stayed around his children, didn't terminate the pregnancy, he never asked about the child,
never had the child DNA tested, never told any friends or parents, let him have a daughter and wife who he was with, etc. for what 19 years? And he is a what... one time rapist? And why wouldn't you get a DNA test and then tell? What... you are worried that they won't believe you? Humm... pregnancy is pretty solid proof. Husband certainly isn't likely to blame you. And your first reaction to your son is don't tell dad, rather than I need to tell him the truth now? Sure.

I'd personally invite Dad on some vacation, spend some time at a beach or mountain hotel, and talk up hiking, the gym, etc. as soon as dad gets the ball rolling. I'd also let it be known to the family you never want to see uncle or mom for now. No invites if they are still around. Maybe in a few years.
