Being technically proficient doesn't automatically make it interesting. I am sure many will disagree, but music is not about "best", or "winner" (i am sure the man himself would agree) - what made mr. van halen great was not his technical stuff, but his ability to make a song sound great, especially with his rhythm and a lot of tasty stuff, changing the color of his tone and soforth. Great guitar playing ? any steely dan album. it is in service of the composition, and makes it even better.

We have enough malmsteen/ Van Halen clones as it is. I can’t believe this would qualify as a winner in 2020. His stuff is stale by like 30 years now.
