Assuming you buy into the conceit of the movie, it does it's job very well and I did so here we are with this latest AMV. I had fun making it, as always.

/Sigh still depressed about it after over a month. If you think about it, we had grown up with these characters, with Digimon 01 and then 02 when we were kids, then re-introduced during the Tri series. And to have it end the way it did (although I am hopeful (as are a lot of people) for another movie) just rips your heart out. Still, more hopeful than the Tamers ending, but I believe Kizuna ending still cuts deeper. Toei, why must you break our hearts time and time again, is it so hard to give your devoted fans a happy ending?!

My heart is cryin seeing these two grow up and saying good by to their Digimon makes me cry, but I know they will see them again

Although, the one consolation the writers do acknowledge is that the 02 ending is Canon, and they are ultimately reunited.

I've never watched Kizuna in full after finding out about its ending. The season 2 ending showed them grown up and still having their Digimon partners, living their lives together as family. Kizuna basically erases that, so since they can't both be the 'real' ending I choose to go with 02's end instead of Kizuna's 'your growing up killed your Digimon' bullcrap.
