Going to a pawn shop is stupid these days. Just sell it online so you don't have to deal with the middle man. They'll always only offer you no more than 70% of its worth.

I'm still not entirely convinced she didn't mean $18.00.

I might pay 18 bucks for it. But seems a bit steep for me.

Brought in a deck of ORIGINAL laminated, pristine condition (verified by a licensed appraiser) signed baseball cards. The appraiser valued the whole deck for almost $4, 000.

The shop I took them to offered me $100 bucks for the deck and when I said no, they gave me the deck back and when I got home I counted 8 missing cards that I found on their shelf the following week for $200-$400 per card.

These shops can fucking burn to the ground and it still wouldn't be enough.

Rick: “best I can do is $50 store credit. And I’m taking a lot of risk here”

I wish people knew how pawn shops work. If you want top dollar for your item, then you need to sell it YOURSELF. Pawn shops are the middle person. They are the people you go to when you don't want to take the time and effort to sell your own stuff. If the book is $18, 000, he is NOT going to offer $18, 000. Duh. This isnt a personal item he is going to keep for himself. Their plan is to resell and make money. The pawn shop wants to make enough money to make this worth their time. If they start at $5000, but end at that gives them the potential of earning about $8000. Keep in mind that they are absolutely taking an expensive risk. Do you know how many people in this world are willing to spend $18, 000 on a first addition Harry Potter book that isn't perfect? NOT many. And if they can't find a buyer, they are out all the money. People thinking he should have been given $18, 000 clearly do not know how pawn shops work. If you want top dollar, fine the buyer yourself.

Hold onto it for a decade, and you'll get $30, 000 for it. Wow, I got a lot of comments for some random remark I made, I wasn't serious.

Remember, pawn shops are primarily loan sharks.
They are not consignment stores or an auction house

Best I can do is a coupon at Home Depot. I take on a lot of risk.

18 bucks? Damn. That's good resale value on a book. I usually give old books away for free.

Just seeing them handle it without any gloves is freaking me out.
