If the Smallville writers were smart, they would have ended Clark and Lana's storyline in season 5 after high school ended. In the comics, Clark and Lana's relationship does not extend beyond high school. Clark left Smallville and Lana behind, and Lana gracefully moved on, admitting that, "You can never belong to one woman, Clark. Superman belongs to the world."

Who cares? Hopefully Lex put Lana on a rocket headed straight for the sun. I've never seen any TV show handicap itself over one character as much as Smallville did with Lana Lang.
