High-Speed Railway (HSR) Construction by Country (1965-2019)

High-speed rail (HSR) is a type of rail transport that runs significantly faster than traditional rail traffic, using an integrated system of specialized rolling stock and dedicated tracks. While there is no single standard that applies worldwide, new lines in excess of 250 kilometres per hour (160 mph) and existing lines in excess of 200 kilometres per hour (120 mph) are widely considered to be high-speed. The first high-speed rail system, the Tōkaidō Shinkansen, began operations in Japan in 1964 and was widely known as the bullet train. High-speed trains mostly operate on standard gauge tracks of continuously welded rail on grade-separated right-of-way that incorporates a large turning radius in its design, however certain regions with wider legacy railways, such as Russia have sought to develop a high speed railway network in broad gauge.

thank you for the visit my brothers. I hope you will always have a very nice day and life ahead of you.

stay blessed.

The number is too old for China, It's HSR runs over 43, 000 km in 2020 and the next plan is 76, 000km.

When we visited China in 2018, we made a point to ride the high speed train from ChangSha to Guilin. It was a fun experience. It was super smooth at 302 km/h.

Spain number two.
Have used their high speed system extensively. Absolutely incredible including the great metro of Madrid and other cities.

Looks like some country’s high speed railway construction was/is high speed in itself.

The biggest achievement really isn't how many km china has built the rails. But the new life style it has brought to the people. HSR in china is cheap, fast and connects almost every major city. It's hard to imagine not to travel by HSR in china. I was born in 80s, when everything was inconvenient. But given the lifestyle we have now, i almost forgot how difficult everything was back then. China made the nightmare of proverty disappear so fast that people born after 2000s often laugh at me coz my childhood story sounds a dark fairytale to them.

I and my wife ride on Shanghai Mev, at 450km per hour in 2010. Amazing, no country has that speed before.

China's railway construction is crazy. It wasn't a gradual increase but more of a meteoric rise. It starts in 2003 and in 2007, just takes off and starts surpassing everyone.

30 years ago, China only had slow trains with speeds of less than 100 kilometers per hour. Now, China can manufacture its own high-speed trains with a maximum speed of 400 km/h, and has 66% of the world's total length of high-speed railways. The speed of all this development is too amazing!
