"It is with Bach that Gould has always been more closely associated, yet it was the music and thought of Schoenberg that most crucially influenced his view of music in his formative years. In the music of Schoenberg he saw an idealistic aesthetic that suited his emerging adult personality."
(Kevin Bazzana, Wondrous Strange, pages 90-91)
On August 25/1959 Gould gave a memorable recital in Salzburg. Of course he played some Bach (Goldberg) and Mozart (Sonata K.330) but, to the astonishment of the sold out crowd, he offered one of Schoenberg's major piano works, the Suite op.25.
The Suite has 5 parts:
1. Präludium (Rasch)
2. Gavotte (Etwas langsam, nicht hästig)
Musette (Rascher) - Gavotte
3. Intermezzo
4. Menuet (Moderato) - Trio
5. Gigue (Rasch)

Я поняла и полюбила Шенберга, услышав именно этот опус в исполнении Гленна. Благодарю! ❤

It takes talent to play this with such charm.

Glenn Gould considers Schienberg's Op. 25 a "masterpiece". Gould's esteem for Schoenberg makes me want to understand this music.

I think you could hear some of this in the Webern piano variations that Gould played.

Бах и Шенберг прекрасно дополняют друг друга. Но только в исполнении Гульда!. Без вариантов.
