Simple Chain Saw SawBuck Using Logs

We just got a tiny little wood stove for our tiny house. The problem is that I had been planning on heating our tiny home with wood and cut a mess of fire wood for normal stove size.

But now this little wood stove uses just 8 inch log sizes with a maximum of 4 to 5 inches thick.

This means that I have to cut all my fire wood in half.

I left my homemade sawbuck behind in New York during our move to Michigan.

I came up with this cool and functional chainsaw sawbuck using logs.

By setting up a pair of logs in parallel I now have a notched form to hold the log I want to cut.

I set up some logs at each corner, standing up, to prevent things from moving around on me.

I used already cut logs to give myself a notch to cut through but you could use 8 or 12 foot logs just the same. After your first cut you already have a notch.

This idea can also be used in the field to quickly set up a form for cutting a mess of fire wood without the risk of hitting your chainsaw chain in the dirt.

Forgive me if I'm confused here but why didn't you cut the logs to the correct size in the first place ?

Nice. I gotta do this cause my cutting axe can't split things much longer than 10 inches without just sinking in, and it's just campwood anyway

Where there's a will, there's a way. Good idea Troy. Hope your knee gets well soon.

since you only need small pieces now ....maybe next year get an electric or battery powered smaller chainsaw and power it via your solar system for cutting the small diameter pieces....save on gas and additives

and nice job on the sawbuck
..can make one of those in the middle of a forest if need be when gathering wood

and its free....and burnable when finished with it

You have the wood stove already installed, in the chalet?

You can build a Rocket Stove or a Rocket Stove Mass Heater and place 1.3 meters logs vertically.

Hey Troy. You showed very good economy of motion while cutting the logs down to the size you need.
I know you can't keep off the knee as the Doc suggested but please try not to over do it. Take breaks when you can
and keep a place to sir nearby.

I was curious about what hollowed out your hold down oak log. Was it some kind of disease in the trunk of that tree or insects?

It would be nice to see your small wood stove in action in the Chalet Troy. With the cold nights you have now is it sufficient to warm the house well? I am wondering how efficient it is since the building is so well insulated.

I've had two knee surgeries, and there's one thing that's consistent throughout, and that's the use of a knee brace. Why aren't you wearing one? You can find an inexpensive one at Walmart. I encourage you to do so, it'll help keep your knee from bending. I know you think you can keep it straight, but if you're gonna move around the homestead like you are, you definitely NEED a brace.

Keeping you all in prayer.

Troy goodness cutting logs like that is like swimming in the ocean and hoping a shark doesn't chew you 😨 Be careful... I got my leg tangled in a weed wacker while trying to rescue one of our dogs and WOW that little thing ripped my lower leg badly over 60 stitches. Thankfully the neighbors ran out in time. I can only imagine what would happen if that chain slipped with your bad knee.
