In Germany we call this fruit salad.we use fruit cocktail, trangrines, cherrys, coconut, and sour cream or plain yogurt.instead of cool whip.

I so enjoyed your "variation" to the 5 cup salad. I grew up with this salad, only served on holidays. But instead of cool whip, it was created with sour cream. Sitting for 24 hours prior to serving, the "sour" of the sour cream was mellowed by the marshmallows. It was ALWAY served in a beautiful ruby and clear cut glass bowl. I'm nearly 70 and still have that bowl. It is ONLY used for the 5 cup salad and again, only on holidays. I've not made this for a few years, but for Thanksgiving this year, I've the ingredients ready (planned to make a couple of weeks ago). I'll bring down the special ruby colored bowl. The memories for me, will be priceless. On a different note, I'll be making Ebleskiver in the pan my great grandmother brought with her from Denmark in the 1880's. It was only made at Christmas for Christmas morning breakfast. I ADORE family traditions for the most part and sharing these with great nephews & nieces only make it more special. Thank you so VERY much for sharing your family recipe.

I’m 90 yrs old and we used to this make this 75 y ago. We used sour cream and refrigerated it for
24 hours before the meal. It goes so well with a turkey dinner! I don’t know why, but it was called “ Sister Accie’s Salad”. In later years the grocery stores began making it, and called it Ambrosia.

The liquid from the pineapple and the mandarin oranges can be heated up with cornstarch or tapioca to make a delightful sauce for a cake or pie.

My mother would have loved this. She loved Ambrosia salad So when I try this I will think of my mother. God bless her soul.

My grandmother made this but without the coconut because my grandfather could not chew it. She always made it a day before and used sour cream instead of cool whip. The marshmallows made the sour cream sweet. She called it "yum yum". My sister makes it for the family now and calls it ambrosia. 😊

I have made this for years...50+ years. The only exception is that my recipe calls for sour cream instead of Cool Whip. I think I will try it with Cool Whip for Christmas.

I loved the idea of adding cherries to this salad. It would be such a nice pop of color as well. Plus I love cherries!

My mom made this with mandrin oranges, fruit cocktail, bananas, mircle whip salad dressing, whipped cream, & small marshmallows.(The white ones). It was a favorite one for us all!(Yumm! Now I've got to make some!!). Never tried it with sour cream.(Will have to try that!). Thanks for all the tips!!

We do the exact same thing, except, we add 1 can of mashed up whole cranberry sauce and 1 cup walnuts !!! We call it cranberry fluff. It is good!!!! Always eat it at Thanksgiving and Christmas!!

My belated mother made this for us growing up. She called it ambrosia salad. Although, not really sure if you can call it a salad? My mom would use 1 block/brick of cream cheese, Cool-Whip, fruit cocktail, & mini-marshmallows. You would be correct, & I would agree w/anyone that says it tasted much better overnight. After all the flavors, & ingredients married together. So yummy! I’ve not made it in quite awhile. I need to resurrect this recipe. There’s even a different version using vanilla/or pistachio pudding as a base for the ambrosia. Different strokes for different folks! Through the years, I’ve changed the recipe to include Gluten-free/& soy free/ & gelatin free ingredients for those of my grown children whom have allergies to the aforementioned items. It doesn’t change the taste, maybe just the texture & consistency of the ambrosia. It all depends on what you like, or how it was traditionally made from how it was remembered.

I always make this and use sour cream, pineapple tidbits, mandarin oranges, mini marshmallows and coconut. Add chopped walnuts on top. ( and cherries if you wish). So

I'm 75 yrs. old and I've been making 5 cup salad since I was 12 yrs. old and my sister came home from AR to WV and gave me the recipe. My recipe was 1 cup of sour cream and crushed pineapple not cool whip or chunked pineapple. Sometimes I added pecans and cherries.

I think this was at every Wednesday night church supper when i was growing up.
I did one similar. Mine had orange gelatin and cottage cheese. I hate cottage cheese but ate it in that salad.

Here in Louisiana my mother and grandmother served Ambrosia, which was made with fresh oranges, apples, pecans, pineapple, coconut, and pecans.

My Mom made this too except it was called Hawaiian Salad & used oranges(cut up) & sour cream instead of cool whip & regular marshmallows (cut in 4th) because the juice absorbs more when cut up. I still make it & love it.
