This video is actually inspired by reality. This plot depicts the fate of countless men from the Faroe Islands. Only two generations ago, men would leave on schooners, be gone for months without any word. Their families would often be waiting for more than half a year at times, not knowing if they would return or if the sea had already claimed them. Sometimes all able-bodied males in several entire families would join the same vessel, leaving their families to charities of others if they did not return. This looks like it could be around WWII which claimed countless Faroese sailors as they braved the German mines to feed the Brits.
Many stories are about 'hamferð', which is the moment we see the husband's reflection in the mirror, despite him not being there. Hamferð is basically a soul, which at the moment of death, can be seen by loved ones as a final goodbye. A way for the deceased to tell them to stop waiting for them to return. The wife knows she is a widow, and thus goes to join him in the sea.
