A Story behind “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen (John Cale version)

This song was originally written and recorded by Leonard Cohen in 1984 on his album ‘Various Positions.' Cohen's rendition was released as a single in Spain and the Netherlands, but got little attention in the United States. Many artists took note of "Hallelujah" and recorded their own versions of the song. Many of these covers found their way into movies and TV shows, popularizing the song across a wide audience.

The song is about a love that has soured and gone stale. Cohen used a lot of religious imagery, including references to some of the more notorious women in the bible. Here is some lyrical analysis:

• “You saw her bathing on the roof, her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you.” Bathsheba, whose husband was murdered by the king so he could have her.
• “She tied you to a kitchen chair, she broke your throne and she cut your hair.” Delilah, who cut off Samson’s locks that held his superhuman strength.
• “I remember when I moved in you and the holy dove was moving too” – This could be a reference to the divine conception and Mary
• The lines referring to the immaculate conception can also be interpreted as having a sexual connotation: “And every breath we drew was hallelujah.”

On the other hand, Leonard Cohen explained: "Hallelujah is a Hebrew word which means 'Glory to the Lord.' The song explains that many kinds of Hallelujahs do exist. I say: All the perfect and broken Hallelujahs have an equal value. It's a desire to affirm my faith in life, not in some formal religious way but with enthusiasm, with emotion."

To me, I think it’s a song about a broken man; disillusioned with love, religion and life. On one hand, the biblical references allude to the demise of a man's faith, and the demise of his relationship with God. The faith he once firmly had, has been questioned and ultimately torn apart. The lyrics can also convey a man disillusioned with (romantic) love, through his own bitter experiences. Love is a competition, or a power struggle. The things he once celebrated, he has lost confidence in; his celebrations have become cold and broken. This is a very powerful and intense song.
