Trump's own statement on his foreign policy approach is "Peace through strength." With that in mind I don't know why anyone expected him to appoint peace at all cost types. My observation is his approach is verbally bellicose followed by negotiation. To do that requires hawks to set the consequences for not choosing peace. The problem with the first term was those hawks were trying to sidestep him, for example lying about troop deployments in Syria. I'll ultimately judge him by what actually happens as opposed to appointments.

Glenn Greenwald is the only one who has a nuanced take on Trump's appointments. Everyone else is either "It's GREAT" or "It's a disaster!"

A relevant question is, “What ‘qualifies’ someone to run the Department of Defense?”

The answer to that question in most cases tells you everything you need to know about who is asking the question, and is actually more interesting than whatever criteria sets are presented as qualifications.

As a Marine Corps Gulf War vet and a GWOT Navy vet I have my own convictions on the subject, which are much more nuanced than an overly simplistic “Neocon or good” dichotomy.

A major issue is this. We cannot wholly retreat from foreign investment and intervention. What I call the “CRINK” (China Russia, Iran, and North Korea) coalition is too strident with their money and material investment around the globe; they must be checked and other countries given a viable option to support the West. That said, there is a LOT of ground between investment/intervention and open war.
