Love seeing you react to content like this, as an alternative music fan it’s easy to miss such wonderful vocal performances as Lewis’s

This song is just pure emotion, 1st time I heard it, it made me cry hearing him outpour everything,
I think some artists (I see him similar to Jellyroll on this front) just have a tone and attitude that just lets you know this pain is authentic

How you didn’t tear up during that song was amazing. But you were analyzing vocal technique, not so much the music video. Great video man. A lot of great information.

Loved this, his voice is so full of emotion to me...effortlessly it would seem. Loved your analysis, that to me is part of his uniqueness and feel he puts to a song. I know I have watched a Scottish young lady sing and she does a lot of that in her songs.

His voice is full of Glasgow living. While not unique to him. His accent shines through in his voice along with what is a unique Glaswegian vernacular.

Hi Chris! I just found your channel today and I love how educational it is - the nasal video was great.

I’ve sang my entire life and learned through recording myself and listening back — and lovely channels such as yours, too! Growing up, I gravitated towards jazz and soul, so, naturally, I tried to emulate those singers (imagine a 6 year old trying to sound like Ella Fitzgerald hahaha) the point being I didn’t know what I was doing so I learned through listening as time went on (not when I was 6). Here is my question:

One time, 7 years ago, I went to a vocal coach. By this time I’d been trying, failing, trying again, having an occasional success, then failing again — my voice was unreliable and had limited range. I could sing some songs well that I’d sung a thousand times, but when I tried to do more it wasn’t easy, which is when I reached out to a vocal coach.

Now, this coach was good; she immediately picked up that I taught myself how to sing listening to jazz. She used a term that explained what I was doing, which is what I’m hoping you might know, because I can’t remember and would love to understand it more. I can still do it. It sounds like the note is shaped like a ball in the back of my throat and I’m tossing it around - throwing it to the front and then back or, side-to-side, depending on the sound I want. The technique uses a lot of throat muscles, so, before I really learned how to loosen my voice up, my throat became tight FAST when I tried to sing outside of this box I unknowingly put myself in. Her words were “Amy Winehouse did that and Adele does it too; they’re really the only two that have incorporated it successfully.” Haha read from that what you will in terms of my ability.

I don’t see jazz vocal mentioned specifically on your page, but because you have an extensive technical knowledge maybe you have an idea? If you do, I’d love to know! :)

Thank you! And thank you for sharing your knowledge! I certainly appreciate it.

Great Analysis, thank you, I've learned a lot. Could you also do one on "Someone you loved" please?

He’s really trusting his musicians, who never get enough credit.

I honestly think that he basically uses his natural voice timbre with a good pitch and putting his personal feel freely and with a lot of heart. You can’t pretend to have the sound of a telecaster from a les Paul as you can recognise a known voice in a noisy crowd.
Technique is good to control the nouances but every instrument has his own timbre and he’s either lucky to have a very personal one and to be able to push it in the right place.

Hey! I was wondering if you could do this kind of video about Hollow Coves. I always try to sing some of them but can't quite get to express the lyrics like them and i dont know how to do it. Great video!
