Jidion’s performance of the Star Spangled Banner is a polytonal masterpiece, with each of the ten key changes over the minute and twenty seconds sounding more meaningful than the next. He starts the “And the rockets’ red glare” line in Db Major, a perfect fourth above the original key of Ab, in solemn tribute of the four presidents atop Mount Rushmore. His use of chromatic sidestepping throughout is especially highlighted here, as he goes up to a tritone (otherwise known as “diabolus in musica”) above the original key to exploit the tension between America’s image as a model society and the poverty, corruption and violence that girds its underbelly. Hats off to Jidion for his brave and boundary-pushing interpretation of our national anthem. America needs more artists like him.
