Looking for a Halloween movie? How about “Attack of the Bone-Eating Osedax Zombie Worms!” You’re whale-come!

“Whale falls” attract a unique community of scavengers. Some of the strangest are bone-eating zombie worms! These worms secrete acid with their “roots” to drill into bone. Symbiotic bacteria inside the worm digest this bone soup to feed their host. The red plumes are the female’s gills—microscopic, parasitic males live inside the females by the hundreds. How’s that for a bone-chilling fact?
