The Eruption of Lake Nyos #shorts

Показать описание
Lake Nyos, located in Northwestern Cameroon, is a large, deep crater lake, which sits on the side of an inactive volcano. Underneath the lake lies a big pool of magma, which causes carbon dioxide to seep into the lake water, converting it into carbonic acid. Tragedy struck in 1986, where the lake erupted, launching over one cubic kilometre of gas into the surrounding air. Firstly, the lake's water level dropped by about a metre after the gas was released, and trees from the surrounding forests were knocked down. A hundred-metre-tall column of water and foam built up, causing a 25-metre wave that crashed against the lake's shore. The invisible cloud of gas travelled between 20 and 50 kilometres per hour down the valley and into the surrounding villages, where the carbon dioxide suffocated any living being it came into contact with. This resulted in the tragic deaths of 1,746 people, and around 3,500 livestock.

I can’t imagine coming home, to find everyone and every living thing in my town dead. Tragic and I hope the loved ones and friends of those that passed, found peace and joy again

Volcanoes do that— ( they can become active at any time).

You have an amazing voice and I could listen to it for hours. Idk why but it's reminiscent of Craig Robert's in Submarine. You really need to narrate an audio book. Great video! 🥰🌹

As a Geologist, I remember this. It wasn't at first clear what had actually happened. People and animals just dead without a mark on them.

I remember when this happened, but I did not know exactly how it happened. That was extremely tragic, but it was well explained. I guess I thought that the people in livestock that were killed or somehow living right off the shoreline of this lake. But this video clarifies it.
