If Alien Romulus' opening had a 5 in front of it, I'd feel it was a hit.
I think coming in under Kingdom of the Apes, which was only moderate, is not a GREAT opening weekend.
And Prometheus was Rated R as well, but opened at $51 - back in 2012.
As @tomcappado pointed out, Alien Romulus doesn't have a horror sized budget of under $30m, so it needs to do better than a horror film.
ALSO - a movie needs to make DOUBLE it's budget + advertising to break even, so probably $300m for Alien Romulus - to breakeven.

I wouldn't say Alien is a huge brand, it's never done exceedingly well at the box office and it's existential R-rated body horror, not exactly the stuff of summer blockbusters. $100M+ worldwide opening on an $80m budget isn't bad all things considered

I think it is a win, since the budget is not that high. I think Alien Romulus will get a good box office at the end.

Grace, Be serious! In what world would an Alien movie make the same amount of money as a Jurrasic World movie? The General Public including kids love dinosaurs!

Considering that Alien: Romulus was supposed to be a streaming movie and then the box office opening prediction was 40M... The actual 41.5M opening is pretty amazing. Everyone involved is super happy about it.

We have to remember ALIEN ROMULUS is an horror R rated movie.

grace alien has never been a billion dollar franchise so why is this a disappointing number for you

Grace, if you’re going to compare Alien Romulus’ opening with other movies, shouldn’t you also bring up their budgets and ratings? It didn’t match the opening of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, but its budget was half of the Apes movie and it was r rated.

It Ends With Us wasn't on the mainstream radar? It's literally the best selling book of the last 3 years, Grace, it's massively popular

Am I the only one who doesn't agree with the take that this is a bad box office?
Edit: I guess I’m not.

I'm sorry, I take offence at the idea that ALIEN:Romulus should've remained a HULU movie.... C'mon Grace, how come a 100+ million opening for an 80m movie is bad???? Specially with great numbers and reviews all over the place.

An August opening, originally made for Disney+, surpassing its predecessor opening weekend 10 years ago… and you think this opening is bad? Crazy crazy

Romulus had an actually really solid opening with a budget of 80 million, considering it was initially projected to open between 28-40 million, but projections were raised to as high as 50 million. So all and all, 108 million opening worldwide with a 41 million domestic is pretty dang good.

$108 million globally for a film initially developed for streaming on Hulu sounds like a win, no? Thanks Grace for Movie Math!

I don't get it. Alien Romulus was supposed to be a Hulu Original film. $41.5m domestic in week 1 is better than $0.

The budget was a mere $80M, this opening is solid.

Imagine thinking that it should have gone directly to hulu. 100 million lost just like that?

It Ends With Us didn't just "blow up" all of a sudden. This book and it's author Colleen Hoover, took the publishing world by storm in recent years. I'm a 20yr veteran in the industry and it is no surprise to me that this film has done so well. These fans are as passionate about this IP as DC/Marvel/SW fans are of theirs, buying more than 20 million copies of these books since Hoover blew up post pandemic.

Romulus only needs $200 million to break even, and it made $100 in just one weekend. The movies box office is fine. Not to mention is also opened higher then Covenant. All around, it’s a success.

When will Grace realize representation doesn’t really matter . Men and women simply have different interests . If there was a male lead in Barbie 2 ( Ken ) . I wouldn’t all the sudden want to see it .
