Realms for Nebulae V2

Rougly a year ago, I posted a video called Realms. A patch designed to move a source sound through sonic 3D space. It's not 3D as in binaural applications but as simple as lowering the volume when a sound moves to the back, filter out the high frequencies and add a bit of space. When you go to the front, the sound is clear and a bit louder. The next step was to play dedicated samples in the near (clear) and far (filtered, reverb, softer) space to 'decorate' the realm/room/soundscape.

It's still a concept prototype even though it's now possible to install it on your own Nebulae and it's still hard to explain. So this video will take its time to help you understand it. I think I've taken Powerpoint to a next level :).

I am hoping a manufacturer will be inspired to collaborate and make a real(ms) module. What's still missing is support for synced recordings (a bit like Morphagene's clock synced REC start/stop) and a clock division output matching the realm size so it's possible to sync external gear. I'd also love to have more onboard effects like a convolution reverb. So there's still a lot to explore!

Wow, what a great new usage for our good old Neb2. Very very interesting 🙏
Thanks from a fellow Nebulae fan and heavy user.
(we briefly met spoke about the Neb2 at the last DMF in Sept 😊)

This is absolutely amazing and makes me want a Nebulae. You and Ian are literally wizards of sound!

Wow!!!! Looking forward to try this out! But I'm also looking forward to a deeper explanation of Nebulae itself, like you mentioned there's not that much info available. Still find the basic functions and especially the recording and the file management difficult to understand.

I had a similar idea I think, but much much simpler, as a pedal. Point was to mimic an outdoor concert where distance from stage, distance between speakers and wind that would affect the soundwaves could be adjusted with three or four knobs.

My goodness! The level of your videos keeps growing.... And now with AI narrative included...
Amazing job man! You are it! My full respect as always

This idea/these ideas .. probably would be a powerful thing. The sense of space in sound, really adds ..

Very well explained how this Realms concept works. I remember that the first version interpreted from your description were two very different things. I could quickly start Realms and inbed the idea because my previous Neb instrument is built around 64 short morphing waves running simultaneously. (Wavetable instrument, like the E352 Cloud Terrarium).

Wow! Very interesting, hope to see this realized, might again start pondering about getting Nebulae. But yes, this the world must have

I'd definitely support a 'Realms' module. Can't wait to try this out.

Hi there, Ian Hightree here!
Thanks for the positive reactions so far. If you have any (technical) questions about Realms, just ask!

Oooh, man... this is just brilliant. :) LOVE the face-plate!!! Personally, I'd prefer an exclusively "Realms" oriented one, as it is glaringly obvious to me as I am (literally) about to press the buy-now button on my first one, that I now require two Nebulae.

I have seen your video several times and I was very impressed by the idea and the result obtained with the Nebulae 2. Certainly a dedicated module would offer many more opportunities, but the fruit of your creation is impressive in itself. I hope you want to make this alternative firmware public, it would be one more reason for me to buy the Nebulae.

as an avid nebulae v2 user, i think that this realms firmware is going to be very very underused haha
its interesting, but nebulae v2 is already an underused module, going even deeper seems like people might not grab onto it

really cool tho! I think it would take so much planning, I played a set where i took a capella vocals of famous artists and used them on top of whatever i played and my niche crowd seemed to dig it haha

Wow, I am lown away and would buy two right away to feed my quad sound environment. Maybe, if this is ported to a module on its own, there will be an option to output stereo twice (front and back, e.g.) or submit a quad signal directly ?! Then you could really draw your listener into the prefab realms! Good luck with the further realisation, but a Nebulae V2 is already on my order list now!

Oh, the manual. Jeez that is bad. This instrument seems very interesting. Huge, and interesting.

amazing work, this is awesome! can't wait to download it and try it out. Will you include a printable face plate overlay? I'd be super interested in a dedicated module as well, though I like the idea of running it on nebulae (mostly since I've already got a couple of them).

Didn't FSOL have this about 25 years ago? 😉
