Ehhh he's leaving out some extra details. The hill of crosses was a sort of peaceful protest/rebeling against the opressive Soviet union. They'd collect a cross each time they saw a few, only for Lithuanians to put up several crossed next day. Again and again. Also as a kid, I went there and saw a lot of plushies, when I asked our teacher she said it's to remember all the children that died by communists setting them alive on fire or shooting them for transporting educational books. The hill symbolizes that with God, we prevail and remain strong, despite corruption oppressing us.

Im from Finland and I did a Baltic roadrip. This was one of our stops along the way. A very striking place to be sure, it was difficult not to feel somewhat emotional when walking among those crosses. So many death, so many tragedies behind those deaths. The ukrainian war is also visible there, many newer crosses there are from the loved ones of ukrainian soldiers.
