I truly want to thank you for this tutorial, I've been racking my brain about trying to square up half square triangles the right way. You have made it very clear. I've just started my quilting life.

You do a great job making them simple, maybe add a quilt pattern.

It's my first time making HSTs. I don't have square quilting rulers, and I'm retired in Mexico, so I can't just pop out to my local quilt store to get one (quilting is not a thing here). My first attempt at trimming was a disaster, so I'm looking for methods that don't require special rulers. Thanks for these tips for when I *can* get my hands on a square ruler!

Thank you for this tutorial. I came upon this by chance and I am excited to try your method for the 8 hst method. Your instructions are really clear. I received the free printable guide and I am delighted the measurements for starting and finishing are very clearly shown for all methods from 2 to 32 hst. Thanks again!

Do you have a guide as to what size square to start with in order to will yield a specific size? I can’t remember the rule. Is it a 7/8 larger than the size you want to end up with?

I have loads of 5 inch squares, so I think I will do the 8 at a time method and process from there...Thank you so much. I love your voice and your way of teaching and showing how to make different HSTs.

Favorite is 2 at a time if I want some control over the portion of a print that appears in the middle of the triangle. 1 at a time if I need absolute control. Never 4 at a time because I don’t want bias edges.

Hi Ledine. I'm new to quilting and am making my first quilt using HSTs. The pattern uses layer cakes (10" squares) but I'm using yardage. I need 80 HST units (the finished squares should measure 9 and 5/8 inch). What's the best way to do it? Also, I need a bigger seam allowance so that I can trim them down later. Thank you.

Thank you for this great tutorial. How do you calculate the size of square needed when making 6 1/4" HST 8 at a time. Sorry if this is a ridiculous question I'm very knew to quilting.

I've been using this trick for several years however I would draw the vertical and horizontal lines in each quadrant. It's less confusing your way. Thank you so much!
