A rationalist viewpoint on this matter. I am a moderate independent voter and a retired U.S. Army Master Sergeant (1972-1993). This issue is and was always about respecting this great nation and what it STANDS for. The national anthem and the flag are NOT symbols of the politicians or their policies, despite spurious claims to the contrary, they are the symbols of this great NATION. When you fail to properly honor our flag, and our national anthem, you are failing to honor this great country and what it STANDS for. I proudly protected this nation from external and internal enemies for over 21 years and truly believe in what it STANDS for and the wonderful vision of its founding forefathers which believed in then revolutionary concept of individual liberty and the ability to live your life with a minimum of interference by those in power. While politicians come and go, the nation itself always remains. No matter how I feel about Washington and its policies, or our countries past history, I for one will ALWAYS render the correct honors to our flag and national anthem. So many have died over the years to give YOU the freedom of speech and liberty you take for granted today. Not rendering proper honors to our flag or national anthem is to lose sight of that and their sacrifice for you. To those who choose to not render proper honors I would suggest that you regain perspective here and believe in this COUNTRY and what it STANDS FOR, and not what the politicians say or do. If you don’t like the politicians then the proper place to deal with that is at the ballot box, and not by failing to render proper honors to our flag and national anthem.

I agree with his assessment of Sean Penn. I disagree with this conclusions about the NFL protesters. It started out as a black man taking a knee as a way to bring to light how his race does not share equally in American liberties based on then police violence against the black community. Now you may disagree with whether that is accurate or not, but the president conflated that to mean he was showing disrespect to the military and America in general. And some members of Fox just jumped on board, like Stu. It was never about disrespect, simply about also wanting respect - but the president changed all that by misrepresenting its meaning since most people really did not know the facts of the matter.

Aside from the politics, let's not kid ourselves, the product had slipped by itself. It was already horribly ad-saturated and then fantasy sports came along and kind of compounded the damage. The disrespect thing is really just the final nail in the casket. Three strikes baby.
