The eyes, Chico.
Sometimes they lie.

It's part of why I love being safe enough to be able to do low - gear sparring

As a boxer, I find your videos so fascinating because of how many similarities there are between boxing and fencing! Eye and head feints are a huge part of boxing as well.

Find somebody who looks at you the way Robin does when he eye feints.

That's why when learning boxing, karate, or other martial arts they often tell you to watch the body instead of the eyes/hands, it's much harder to fake or disguise shoulder/hip movement. Dunno how well it translates to fencing though, since with a sword you can make bigger changes in strike point with smaller changes in body movement and you can strike effectively with less power so you can hold back on moving your hips and shoulders.

That's really neat! I hadn't ever thought of using eyes to feint

Yeah, I'd faint looking into those eyes, too... oh wait, that's not what the trick is?

This is what stunt fighter actually do but in reverse. You que your partner for an attack with your eyes and only after you partner starts a block or evasion do you actually start your attack.

Your eyes are hidden, but you can still draw a face in your fencing mask and tilt your head towards the feint target, kinda like a bird moves its head!

Love todays outfit, it has a real “Now I’m just a simple country swordsman” vibe to it

I was gonna ask why Gomez Adams is giving me fencing lessons, but that's actually completely in character.

Damn dude. I was legit looking at your face, hips, and shoulders in the video before you stabbed me in the face. Point tak... Er... I mean, lesson learned.

We do this in Taekwon-do, I'm sure all martial arts do it too

Weirdly effective, and consistently works

This works wonderfully in martial arts and boxing as well.
In Taekwondo with so much kicking, it's powerful when you can accurately kick while focusing your eyes on the fake target

still usable in martial arts to this day :)

This is a really cool thing for you to bring up. I've been boxing for years, and in boxing eye feinting is as much of a tool as any other aspect of it, it's neat that it can also be applied to fencing!

As a magician, I approve. People react to all sorts of things without knowing it. The trick is to make it seem natural. You can't stare daggers at some place and then feint. Make them realise that they can parry because your look will give it away, give them two or three "wins" by having your move read and then hit them with the feint. The issue is that you have to be such a good fencer that you can duel without thinking about it. It's the same with performing magic. The craft has to be automatic, so you can spend your attention at misdirection and crowd work.

...is magic a transferable skill to dueling?

Reminds me a bit of the spinning attack feints you see in UFC these days. It's a genius move because most people would rather just move out of the way if you commit, thus giving you free space if they fall for the feint.

The eye feint is huge in unarmed martial arts which is what I love about cross training.
