Показать описание
Ahlat Seljuk Cemetery, located in the Ahlat district of Bitlis, resembles an open-air museum containing medieval Turkish architecture tombs. The graves are located around the city's Meydan Cemetery and in the old neighborhoods of Ahlat and spread over an area of 201 decares. There are 118 graves out of more than 8 thousand in number. In the cemetery, in addition to the cist graves with and without witnesses, each of which has the feature of a monumental structure, there are also chamber-style underground tombs, which are Central Asian Turkish Tomb types.
The tombs, known for their rectangular prism-shaped graves that are larger than the usual grave dimensions, up to 3.50 meters high and decorated on all sides, also have the distinction of being the largest Turkish-Islamic cemetery from the early period.
The tombs, which are also described as reflections of the Orkhon Monuments in Anatolia and attract attention with their fine stone carvings as well as their majestic appearance, include dragons, palmettes with sliced symmetrical leaf motifs, oil lamps and geometric motifs from the cultures of the Turks when they lived in Central Asia.
