Looking at the recent changes of youtube channel WTF1's hosts and the comparisons being made to the British version of Top Gear.

My attempt at making a video in 1 week. I think it turned out ok...

On the P1 podcast, Matt and Tommy have said they left to start their own venture. So they weren't fired

And starting their own “P1 with Matt and Tommy” was a boss move though

One of the reason I like Matt and Tommy is because they seem relatable to an extent that I feel I could be part of. Rather than a heavy monotone information dump about F1 and its’ seasonally drama, they make it tone down a slight, add some outsider opinion, while still keeping onto the tone of the drama but not over embellishing it, but is still extremely easy to comprehend for new and older fan of the sport

About the Top Gear case, I do think that even though the trio’s own chemistry is unquestionably the main reason why it worked so well, when they reunited in Grand Tour, some magic was still lost. There were definitely more major factors that contributed on their successes, like the teams who worked behind them, those writing the scripts, making ideas or the visual and stuff.

One thing I did see missing is that the trios dressed too well in GT (no joke). I think one of the reasons why TG was so popular and funny is because the hosts looked like some bloke from your local pub instead of those super stars that you could never relate with.

I didnt realise WTF1 was owned by another company. When they first put out that goodbye video I thought it seemed very sudden. There's usually a lead up when a host is departing before they're actually leave so im inclined to believe they were forced out. When Jeremy was fired from Top Gear that was a sudden change, then Richard and James followed afterwards knowing the trio was the show.

Interesting to note that Matt and Tommy's 'Goodbye' video has been removed from the channel - you can see it's not there in the screenshot at 5:02. Also calling some of the new presenters 'way under qualified' is putting it *very* politely.

I think part of the reason Top Gear was so successful was that the presenters had so much time to build that chemistry. If you go back and watch some of the first seasons, you see that it takes about 3 seasons before the trio is really comfortable and another season or two before they're in the swing of it.

After Jess left, WTF1 was never quite the same but Matt and Tommy were enough to carry the viewership. Now they're gone, so is WTF1 to a lot of people. I just feel bad for the new talent, they've been given an impossible job. We've seen this with TONS of YT channels and WTF1 isn't the exception

I think what made WTF1 that popular is that despite bein possibly number 1 in terms of sub growth, they kept having that "casual fan" attitude about things, never trying to appear like professionnal journalists, making comedy out of the drama instead of taking F1 so seriously, they were basically like educated fans having a fun time with the audience whether the race was good or bad.
Most F1 channels are very focused on having the "right" opinion, on dissecting rumors, on surfing on every bit of drama with their own take. And then theres the chemistry, Tom, Matt and Katie (which you didnt name but shes a BIG part of the group imo, wish she'd make a channel with those 2) are a good group in podcast, it doesnt feel like theres a battle between them for "who should speak" like on many other channels.

Last thing is that it was a group effort, and I prefer watchin multiple people talk about a race event, with multiple takes, than ONE guy or just a bunch of dudes repeatin more of the same. For example Tommo is gettin very popular but his talky videos/streams about news sounds more like "I'll just say whatever for an hour on this news bit I could cover in 2 min because people are sendin money anyway" (his edited videos are great though). One thing WTF1 had over everyone is bein genuine and respectin their time.

The fact is that Matt was the face of WTF1, and Tommy literally founded the channel. So why whoever owns it now decided to get rid of them is definitely either money or trying to be too PC

You hit the nail on the head. Plenty of F1 channels, but we liked Matt and Tommy for them, not just the F1 stuff. How is it that hard for people to understand that?

I agree with the loss of the signature personalities effecting a show or project.
Smosh would be one that has either recovered from this partially or have kind of found a new audience.
I'm pretty sure by looking at the homage shows to The OG Top gear on YouTube done by other presenters now, The comments section is populated with people who watched TG and now are older but not alot of new people.
So the change of what the audience likes also could effect the popularity of media.
But For this to happen a show must have been on air for atleast a decade like TG.

One big difference for Top Gear UK vs all of the other versions is that you got the sense that these people were actually friends, and that it wasn't just an act for the viewers. Yeah, they fought a lot, but at the end of the day, they still liked one another. You don't really get that from the others.

It's so sad to see this kind of "business", but in reality it's all about money. Nobody thinks about the consequences.

It must be said I was surprised by how abrupt and sudden their leave was. Seemed weird for them to have left a project that was doing so well for them. Also no mention on Katie either.

It's one thing to expand the crew by adding additional hosts and presenters for different segments on the channel, it's entirely another to REPLACE the original hosts. Idk why it is so hard for companies to understand that the hosts and people who interact with the audience are the secret sauce, not the format itself. Take for example CarThrottle - Alex left and despite Jack and Ethan still being there, there is no filling the massive hole that is gaping from a missing Kirsten. Personalities are what bring vies, not politics and "trendy topics".

this was a surprisingly brilliant video and way above what I expected from a channel with 2k subs

Dude, great video. Engaging, well edited, and informative… Subscribed!

Ps, RT and AH were my main content consumed for entertainment. I miss the vibe they used to have… I’d love to see a deep dive into them.

You absolutetly nailed it with the comparisons especially Roosterteeth.

The race YT channel was my go to whenever something happens in F1. but since they slap aramco logo in almost every new video, it was bonkers
