Black individuals are consistently incarcerated at rates disproportionate to their white counterparts, and frequently experience lengthier sentencing for the very same crimes committed. We recently sat down with Topeka Sam to discuss her time in prison, how it impacts women of color and what can be done to breakdown the prison to pipeline issue impacting our communities.

It’s difficult for me to feel sorry for you when you knew you were breaking the law. Instead just don’t break the law, don’t do drugs.

How to avoid mass incarceration: break the poverty cycle by not having children out of wedlock. Finish high school. Get a higher education and/or trade. Avoid those who aren’t part of your journey toward self betterment.

We All will do wrong before we do right because we believe we know better. No woman or man is worth doing time. I was involved with a fine-a$$ drug dealer and user but I knew I had wanted better so I kicked him to the curb. The key is, “I wanted better”. Not everyone knows or believe that they can do better and have better.

Make better choices…for the innocent that start offa story with I was walking minding my own business and arrested for no reason, never did drugs or even thought of committing a crime, okay!

Let's not forget Prison is a Business. Some people do the same crime but get better lawyers that know the legal lingo and presto chango no hard time.
