Mazda has been working for years behind the scenes on a new Rotary system - and the rumors just keep on coming. With Mazda's incredible Miata still on sale to this day and its competitors coming out in full force with the Toyota Supra and new Nissan Z, it might be time for Mazda to truly reveal what might be going on behind closed doors. So let's talk about it.

Mazda is always the underdog of Japan, punching far above their own weight class. I'm excited to see what they do the next few years, especially with their new turbo inline 6.

Let’s hope it has a manual and rear wheel drive. An analog feel would be great too. Too many cars have electric power steering and TCS that numb the driving experience. Hoping Mazda sticks to their roots and answers the call appropriately with the new RX.

To me, it sounded like the rotary was going to be a range extender designed to only run at a specific RPM since it'd be optimized for maximum efficiency. I hope I'm wrong though. Basically, I'm saying that I don't think that your right foot will be in control of the rotary engine's speed.

Jason at Engineering Explained also mentioned one possibility about the hybrid assist in the rotary engine patent which is by far one of the most ingenious and unique setup I’ve seen in a hybrid car. Simply put, a 48V electric motor is placed directly in front of the e-shaft which can control the rotation of the rotors. Essentially, they’re trying to make a VVT system to fully control intake and exhaust during combustion events rather than dealing with traditional valve systems.

Add that to the already standard SkyActiv, direct injection, and EGR I’m convinced Mazda finally perfected the original Wankel engine.

All good points. Think a hybrid all wheel drive would be cool. Electric power the front. Rotary to the rear. Electric kicks on for highway cruising. Rear wheel when you want to give it the beans!

There is also a possibility that the RX-9 might go more luxury and compete against the GT-R and outgoing NSX. The cool thing about the hybrid tech and a rotary engine is, that a rotary engine is more compact and lighter than a standard combustion engine. And hybrid cars relies heavily on reducing weight to give a car a sporty feel, the rotary really aids to this I can’t wait to see what they have in store. I believe there still planing on testing a one-rotor hybrid system on the upcoming updated CX-30 soon too.

You can look at the “RX-9” as the FT-1 Concept and the original NSX 2012 Concept. Both took a long time to come out, both were showcased in Gran Turismo. So I’m sure Mazda is doing the RnD at the moment so I think it will come out.

With Nissan and Toyota possibility pushing Mazda back into the sports car market it makes me hope other companies follow in, like honda just made the family sedan sports car with the type s, a redone s2000 right now to compete with the market would be super cool to see

The RX-9 renderings look really good. Gives DB11/Vanquish vibes

Fingers crossed that the RX9 and the Mazda 6 share a platform. Imagine the insane possibilities OEM and Tuner Builds.

I really hope they bring back the rotary. Maybe they will use liquid piston rotary technology.

This is very well worded. Been a rotary owner since I got my driver's license. Appreciated you chatting on the rx8 with emissions issues too. It's an important subject people tend to glance over. The amount of stupid design on the rx8 due to emissions causes you damn near to have to reinvent the engine yourself to try and make power. Exhaust ports for example are a joke.

Very likely to have a manual, since the concept car in GT7 even had a manual in it

I hope it looks exactly like that once it finally comes out, absolutely beautiful car in my opinion

I think it would be incredible if Mazda would make a sports car with their 3.3 inline six that they've come out with. It's a healthy engine with tons of technology, and in the cx90 it already has a rwd bias sooo

If they don't release something close to the concept I'm going to be upset. What a great looking car!

Gosh I really hope they do it. A naturally aspirated 3 rotor paired to a torquey hybrid system and a manual transmission driving the rear wheels would be an incredible combo. The low center of gravity of the batteries would really go well with the ethos of the RX car, and the torque from the electric motors would round out the rotaries lack of torque for a punchy and useable power band, from 1k-9k rpm. All of that packaged in Mazdas current design language, we really have the potential for another slam dunk, like the FD RX7. Hopefully American sales reflect it this time

A friend of mine and I recently had a conversation about this. You mentioned every point we disscused except one. A hybrid rotary would be an almost perfect engine. Why you may ask? Well, because the electric motors would be able to provide insane low-end torque, thus removing one of the rotaries biggest flaws, a lack of low-end torque. So, if the "RX-9" is produced, it could have the potential to not only kill the supra and 400Z, it could probably be able to challenge the likes of the Porsche Cayman and other faster vehicles.

Yes i can understand the Rotory engine always got really bad fuel mileage and setting it up as a hybrid may not be such a bad move. But from a modification standpoint it would be harder for the backyard mechanic to learn the tech and do the work to make more power because of all that. Hopefully it has a manual version

I have an rx8 and it runs fine, it runs just as well as an rx7.
If you take good care of it, it runs forever, but most people never check the oil or drive at full throttle when it's still cold.
