Welcome to Deconstruction Gaming’s Guide to Gaming Terms. In this video we will explore the acronym FPS (Genre). So what does FPS mean? FPS stands for First Person Shooter.

FPS games are characterized by a camera system that views the game through the player characters eyes. This First Person viewpoint can be applied to humanoid characters, vehicles, or whatever avatar the player is controlling. When many think of FPS games they think of combat games such as Call of Duty or Halo. Often the interface of an FPS game will include a weapon in front of the camera, sometimes with information displayed in the main game world as opposed to on a HUD. FPS games are often high action and require fast reaction times, sometimes called “twitch” games, because of the quick “twitchy” movements. Depending on the platform these games are often controlled with a keyboard and mouse setup or with dual analog sticks on a game controller.
