This. Even the first Pope denied Jesus 3 times in one night. However, it is clear that some form of tradition is implied to be necessary. Yes, there are verses that talk against tradition, but they’re completely out of context. For example Matthew 15:6; it does not strike against tradition as a concept, it is about how God’s people messed up and then overcompensated with a myriad of laws.

This was very well explained. I'm Catholic but I never really thought about this point.

Tradition! Tradition! I can hear Tevye from Fiddler on the Roof 🎻 singing it now.

I often think about the times when most people were illiterate! That helps to explain the role of tradition and authority

Very well put. And it's because of Tradition that The Church chose the books they did for the bible on August 28th AD 397.

We need the love of TRUTH to know what scripture means.

While the Apostles taught the Gospel message orally before it was written down, their teachings and the Gospel accounts share common themes. The words from their oral teachings align with the Gospel narratives, and later traditions often draw from both sources

As individuals believers, we are encouraged to study the Scriptures to be approved. We must have a close relationship with God so that we can discern what the truth is. Jesus is what we need. He comes first. He is the head of the church, the body of born-again believers. I am thankful God called me before I knew anything about religion. He has set me free. He is the One I am yoked to. I trust His Holy Word and His Spirit in me for guidance. It seems you do not think we are capable of understanding the truth without the church. He gives us His Spirit, and He enables us to understand.

I’ve hear an argument for sola scriptura like this:

Q: What bible did Jesus use
A: Old testament
Q: Who put together the old testament
A: The pharisees
Q: Did Jesus think the pharisees were infallable?
A: no
Q:So how come the church is infallible?

As a protestant, I am curious about how catholics would answer that question?

Often catholics use matthew 16:19, but I am just not convinced about that verse teaching “infallibility”.
Are there also other ways you could answer this question?

Thanks in advance…

In the beginning, "tradition" WAS the Scriptures. The Scriptures came to us by oral tradition, but once they were written down, the Scriptures took precedence. The Scriptures are our "Constitution, " and they rule, but we have to interpret them after the promptings of the Holy Spirit in our hearts.

Christ never intended to start a new faith.
This sums it up.

Hebrew scriptures existed before the church. Took a couple of centuries for early church to sort out which Christian scriptures were inspired.

The words attributed to Jesus Christ, as recorded in the Gospels*, are very clear. While there is no Church without Tradition, I believe there is nothing in our Religion which is more important than the word of God incarnate on Earth.
*Meaning e.g. the Beatitudes and Parables.

Tradition cannot save one soul.
“But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? ”
Matthew 15:3 KJV
The commandments of God vs the traditions of men is everything. God's commandments preceed tradition. They preceed creation. The spoken WORD of God existed before the written WORD. Blessings to all, for God is Love.

Old Testament was only starting to be created during Moses time. Prior to that it was all tradition.

I would differ on the church came before Scripture. Yes, wide spread access to Scripture and mass education to read/study it for oneself, is a recent thing.

Peter wrote about Paul writing stuff and Peter and Paul and the gospels put lots of OT quotes in their writing.

Romans 15:4 very clearly states the purpose of keeping the OT nearby for people of Jesus; whenever possible.
