It's quick and easy to harvest basil seeds. The trick is to know when the seeds are ready. By letting your basil seeds go to flower and knowing when and how to harvest, you'll never have to buy basil again!

Thank you! I saw sparrows hanging out for lengthy periods of time on my flowering basil plants today and realized they must be eating seeds--- and so I searched for a video and I appreciate you showing me!!

I grew holy basil from seed and it just took off like a rocket ship. It loved the sunny Southern California weather

Super helpful! I cut some of my basil flowers too early and then decided to look it up. This is EXACTLY the information I needed and luckily I have plenty more basil in the garden I can let go to seed before I harvest :)

Thank you for the tips. I didnt know whether to let them all dry out, or whether they dry ones would start to drop before the green part was ready.
Appreciate the tip on the tomato plants. I like the whole idea of combined growing.

purchase a small blender with dull knives. Put basil seeds in blender, knocks seeds out fast. Easiest way for home gardener to harvest basil seeds. Nice video

i grow sweet, summerlong and purple basils. the two green varieties must be seeded in (or done in the greenhouse and transplanted) every year; the purple takes care of itself and is invasive if let go. we get thousands if volunteers every year and pluck like mad to control them. good addition to compost bins all the way to seed - but never after or any with flowers. if you have a dedicated herb garden, plant purple basil once and have it forever. it’s great in any italian sauce, along with green varieties. dried and crumbled on pizza or cooked in your spaghetti sauce are my favorites...

Separate seeds from spent flower heads with blender or shake in bag. Strain & blow chaff away.
Cover self polilnating plants, like basil, with small hole mesh bag to reduce cross polination & bug infestation & shake plant to help pollination. Pass the word.

If I let those grow, the leaves of the basil seem to get smaller and smaller as they grow. So i've always taken them off no now i'm gonna try this.
Just a helpful hint next time you wanna show something that tiny use a white piece of paper or a white napkin? It'll help stand out more just a thought. :)

Thank you!! Do you pull old basil and start over with seeds or does the basil come back?

1:35 they are not that tiny... I think they are pretty average. And they seem to have a great personality too

Hi Jill! Your basil plants are big and strong. What's the kind of basil did you plant? From a brief look at the leaves, I would say it's Italian, Genovese. Thank you!

Will just one of those tiny black seeds grow an entire plant? I’m the only basil lover in the family so I don’t need dozens of plants each year.

Why sprinkle them around your basil plants?
