For those who are wondering why they didn't just ban for proplay (for example a rule that says to not laneswap otherwise you are dsq) it's because they don't want to completely remove lane swap but they want to remove those 4 minutes where toplaners can't play the game. Also in higher elo (mostly challenger) people would perform it in soloq too. So a rule wouldn't have helped there. They already said it's not a good fix and they are working on something better but they released this because they need something now

thats a bit sad because on a strategical point lane swap makes absolute sense, i even wish we could see more lane swap beetween top and mid also, its a like an additional mind game

Its not been an insta fix btw, theyve been try a bunch of stuff and its not been working. Not only for esports but lane swapping is becoming more prevalent in somple solo queue as well. People complain about this but then also complain about lane swapping. The tower thing they did a while ago to try and counter this was also complained about, I think whatever they do people will complain but i dont think this change is bad personally, just… make the detection range not be the way it is.

One more thing There's no counter picks at all in competitive. Like you dont have to lane in a losing match up

They already said this is supposed to be a temporary, quick, bandaid fix and NOT the solution to the problem.

I think it's fun to watch the chaos of any role invading any lane at the start of the game with some crazy fights. Way funnier than everybody being well behaved in their own lanes.

Well it also got to a point where high elo was starting to flood with laneswaps, that was the main trigger for the kill patch.

Proplay may still find other ways to laneswap, but at least there should be no way soloq will have any left.

Honestly, Laneswapping being removed makes total sense though. Top laners play top because they want a 1 v 1, not to play a 2 v 1. Had a game in unranked where our midlaner moved top and my top duo ended up just being miserable the whole game because of it.

This kind of change and deisgn philosophy is the essence of why my friends and I swapped to dota. If you hate this kind of thing, give dota a good try.

Its not that they won't balance around pro at all, but they will let the meta completely change in ways like lane swapping. In fact, a semi 2v1 was the norm for a long time. A dedicated jungler is rarer than a dedicated roamer or trilanes. There are slow metas, but i feel like so often i click on a lol game and the kill score is crazy low and they just dodge each other for long periods. In dota, if you dont want them to run from you and you're the better team, they usually dont get to run.

I find it funny that people in low elo are complaining about the 'fix' at all since they don't see lane swaps. Like it's not going to affect your random silver game one bit lol

The rest of the world does not care of how good you are playing

But THE ENTIRE WORLD likes a good show, drama and basically something added to a game instead of just.. The game

I get bored of lane swap in pro, because you have the best players and they interact with each other the less possible, and is not relatable to base players either

It took very little effort to fix and was a big complaint in ESports.
It also barely affects normal play (unless you decide to dive top/mid with your support before minute 4 or whatever it is)
They said themselves that this is a bad and rough solution but because it won’t affect normal play that much they can keep it in for now.
If you implement something like this too close to a tournament it may trough over strats planned and cause chaos. In solo Q you can’t play chaos and we all know Riot isn’t balancing around flex.
So when there is an issue with an easy fix you just fix it. No crazy money conspiracy behind it.

Eeey he showed my comment, I’m famous now! Well thank you for answering my question. I’m still a little confused but seemingly the main reason is simply that viewers find lane swapping boring to watch. I just don’t understand why lane swapping suddenly became such a big problem that riot had to brute force a temporary, but bad solution? Did the play styles change a lot all of a sudden?
Maybe my confusion also comes from the fact that I haven’t played LoL in a few years now (so I might not be ajour with the game) and that I completely disagree with riot and others dictating how the game should be played. I understand that they aren’t interested in aram matches with everyone in mid lane but still… to me this seems like taking it too far

Im not a game designer, but surely they could have found a way to discourage lane swaps enough that it was no longer meta rather than just forcibly getting rid of it entirely.
