It was only during that song that she asked people to be quiet. The crowd would sing along for the rest of the songs.

okay so like there is one side of me that is like

yes finally someone shushes the crowd so we can actually hear the song and not people next to me singing…

but the other part of me is like one that’s kinda rude, and it didn’t do her any good💀

Do y’all head the lyrics? “I am my mothers child I’ll love you till my breathing stops I’ll love you till you call the cops on me” let her sing the lyrics she wrote. The low notes to immediate high notes make the song that much more emotional. I wanna hear her sing it like it’s supposed to not the crowd like they want

Honestly i get what she was trying to do but she need to explain herself beforehand. Like is saying “the next song is very intimate and id like to sing this one on my own” that hard?

Imagine before paying for the concert ticket a disclaimer “buy buying this ticket you agree to not sing along and may be either shushed or ejected from the premises at any point with no reimbursement” 😂😂😂😂

Lorde wasn’t emotional and she wasn’t having a break down or anything like that. You can look at other concerts and she does it there too and the song is meant to sound like crying. She also says at one of her concerts, “But I think occasionally, it’s the moment for, there were moments for silence. And there are moments for sound. The internet has decided that this was very bad, and very rude. I had a weird moment with it I was like ‘huh I’ve been misunderstood.’ There are moments for silence and moments for sound and I realized, f*ck being misunderstood, compared to having this room full of people who understand me. She also responds to the backlash with a video saying that she does this every time she sings it and wanted to sing it a cappella and/or off the mic because she wants people to hear her. She also says she wants to try something different and that it’s her and the crowd singing together for an hour and a half. So don’t go bashing her and telling the artist what she can and can’t do at her concert because you aren’t the one singing up there. And before you go and comment something like “well I’m the one that bought the tickets so I should be able to sing with her” buying the tickets means you like her music and the way she sings it, and if you don’t, then don’t buy the tickets. 🤷🏻‍♀️

im a bit on the fence about it tbh. I respect that she has the confidence, and some people really do need to be shushed at a concert because they just shriek the whole time. But you cant POSSIBLY expect a room full of fans, possibly a lot of die hard ones, to not sing with you. If you want them to hear you? crank that mic/bass.

My take is that, it’s really only happening occasionally to one song “Writer in the Dark” of Lordes. The lyrics are pretty deep and the meaning of the song itself is deep. It’s a silent song as well for a reason, Lorde maybe wanted silence for the song. It’s not a sing along song either, yes you can argue it is, but for me personally, it feels like a song you’d listen while in bed going to sleep lol. I also think that at this time, she wanted to try the thing (I don’t know what’d you call this) but it’s like a Beyonce mute challenge or Madison beers silent challenge. The only difference is Lorde wanted the crowd to be silent while she sings the lyrics to the pre-chorus and chorus of the song. Lorde was ahead of her time doing this I believe because fans (online specifically) did not understand the assignment.

Many people are complaining about how she shushed the audience and how her singing wasn't that great. I agree with her voice not being the best. Keep in mind this is a performance, like many other performances that are not always music related have some type of art experiment. Live poetry performances, dance performances, theatrical performances. Its all a form of art. Some people like myself like going to a concert because I'd like to hear the band/artist perform and enjoy their musical creations. But there's always people who like to get drunk, be annoying af, screaming at the top of their lungs making it hard for anyone around them to heard the vocalist sing. Specially if you're a huge fan of the artist and you want to enjoy the experience of listening to the band live, not from your phone, or a disk or record and the person behind you or infront of you screaming like a dying banshee won't stfu. Usually there's always quite a few screaming and horrible singing banshees in the audience making the music and singing from the artist get drowned out. I honestly feel though one is free to do whatever they'd like, its always best to be considerate of everyone around you and remember you're not the only one in there. Id personally and like many others prefer hearing the artist not so great singing over some strangers drunken banshee screaming/singing.
