The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) is a collegiate athletic conference in the United States in which its fifteen member universities compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA's) Division I, with its football teams competing in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), the highest levels for athletic competition in US-based collegiate sports. The ACC sponsors competition in twenty-five sports with many of its member institutions' athletic programs held in high regard nationally. ACC teams and athletes have claimed dozens of national championships in multiple sports throughout the conference's history. Generally, the ACC's top athletes and teams in any particular sport in a given year are considered to be among the top collegiate competitors in the nation. The ACC is considered to be one of the six collegiate power conferences, all of which enjoy extensive media coverage and automatic qualifying for their football champion into the Bowl Championship Series (BCS). With the advent of the College Football Playoff in 2014, the ACC will be one of five conferences with a contractual tie-in to an "access bowl", the successors to the BCS.

Founded in 1953 in Greensboro, North Carolina, by seven universities located in the South Atlantic States, the conference added additional members in late 1953, 1979, 1991, 2004, and 2013. The 2004 and 2013 additions extended the conference's footprint into the Northeast and Midwest. The most recent expansion in 2013 saw the additions of the University of Notre Dame, the University of Pittsburgh, and Syracuse University. In 2012, the University of Maryland's Board of Regents voted to withdraw from the ACC to join the Big Ten Conference. On November 28, 2012, the ACC's Council of Presidents voted unanimously to invite the University of Louisville as a full member, replacing Maryland.

What an amazing act of respect from ball players so young they most likely never watched Dean Smith coach a game.UNC & Duke,  the MOST bitter rivals, what an awesome show of mourning for Duke & UNC players/staff come together in silence. Hats off Dukies, I never really enjoyed your games, but I've researched & found awesome acts of kindness from Coach K.
Coach William grief is seen clearly on his face as this was UNC & Williams 1st game after his beloved Coach Smith's death at "The Dean Dome". Sorry Coach Smith, know you didn't want this venue named after you, but we fill better as we can now call the UNC Student Activities building.. Bit like heavens opened up to give Coach Williams this most needed win & who knows, perhaps this win  came from above, Coach Smith trying his best to have this win for Williams. After Coach Smith died, it was almost unbearable to watch close ups & interviews with Williams. This man was  beyond the greatest grief. He looked broken & without direction. I've NEVER seen a coach, professional or collegiate mourn a past Coach as Williams did.  BUT what a win for UNC to defeat Duke at the Dean Dome ! One can only imagine that Coach Smith's presence was felt & pumped affected UNC players to win or die over "this particular game". Both team were a bit subdued & I'm certain Coach K put the word out "don't be so flagrantly dissing UNC, they've lost their mentor". A look of strength became obvious as they played this game for Coach Smith. For every basket & great play of winning this game, their rival NC Duke played during one of Carolinas low ranked season. Duke players & fans were upset by Duke loosing, but I can only think that Coach K was not that upset at the time or even  days later. Coach K seemed to be at peace loosing the win to UNC as Coach Smith had just died. And how about Williams, puffy eyes, tears, heart broken by his Coach, friend & mentor's death. This was UNC & Coach Williams 1st home game after Coach Smith died. William's heart was heavy, but he coached just as professionally & astute during 1st game UNC played after Coach Smith died? If so, God willed this winning game for a new angel, Coach Dean Smith. R.I.P.
