I'm so happy to find these rare masterpieces on the tube!

"Surusoitto" offers a glimpse into the unknown world of the eighth symphony, not only being composed at the same times Sibelius wrestled with this unfortunate project, but through the unique musical language. Having heard excerpts from the lost symphony, you could tell Sibelius was trying to somehow merge his own musical mother tongue to the language of modern music at the time (think about the overall music written in 1930-50). I think he never was satisfied, assuming this was a hopeless task from the beginning. There were no compromises to be done in a way Sibelius’ true musical expression wouldn’t have disappeared into the void of total dissonance and lawlessness (or on the contrary, total conformity to law).

But perhaps there would have been a way? Perhaps this monumental piece gives you a hint of this existential paradox, the never completed universe of the eighth symphony?

In the Intrada there is a nearly direct quote from the Seventh Symphony.

Surusoitto is the composer's last original piece, written in 1931.

Wie schafft ein Komponist das, zwei so exakt zu proportionieren...?
11 1/2 = 2 x 5 3/4
