Turns out having those H23 rods in there probably were saving this motor. Now that you've got full Rod stroke with the proper H22 Rods your Piston met your Valves under valvefloat from banging it off the limiter. Maybe lower the Compression ratio for the new motor? Good luck bud!

someone mentioned in the video when you rebuilt the engine that they figured the main reason for the engine in the hatch lasting so long was the fact that it had the slightly shorter rods with a lower compression ratio. It very well could’ve been something else to cause the engine to let go, but it seems extremely coincidental, but also logical to come to the conclusion that that’s what could’ve contributed to it

If you end up needing another spare head to keep on hand, I've got one that needs a slight resurface. It's a complete head with valvetrain, cams and everything. Free if you want it. I'm in Jacksonville, but I travel to Orlando and Tampa a lot for work so just lmk if you want to set something up to grab it.

Looking forward to seeing the hatch back up and running. I'm in a similar situation. Bought another engine and in the meantime, i'm respraying my engine bay and collecting a bunch of supporting upgrades for the visual presentation of the bay.

Strut tower extensions . Brake booster delete and a 1" itr master. As a 3 point strut bar as a refresh to the engine bay of the ek hatch..

For upper control arms there are other options in the marke. Hardrace comes to mind as an alternative

Finally seeing you are refreshing the head. Skunk2 pro cams is a nice edition
